Crank 2: High Voltage: The movie with the worst tagline ever!
Back in 2006 the world was introduced to a little action movie called "Crank" (One of my all time favorite action movies). It was written by Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor and starred Jason Statham as hitman Chev Chelios. The movie has a plot that held no room for any dull scenes. Namely that Chelios had been poisoned with some "Chinese shit" that would kill him if his adrenaline dropped below a certain level. The plot although completely ridiculous still had some realism to it if that makes any sense. The movie however ends with Chelios falling out of a plane thousands of feet above Los Angeles and bouncing off of a car. So a sequel was never anything that even crossed my mind.
But lo and behold 3 years later comes "Crank 2: High Coltage" a direct sequel to the first. Yes you heard me right a direct sequel that essentially picks up right where the first one left off then jumps 3 months. Chelios survives his fall and is literally shoveled off the pavement by members of the triad. His heart is then harvested and replaced with an electric one. Soon he escapes with his electric heart and begins a vendetta to find the person responsible for stealing his real heart and getting it back, of course. And so begins the most surreal and over the top movie you may possibly ever seen.
While the first movie strove for some sense of realism the second film throws all of that out the window. Instead going for an "oh my god did I just see what I think I saw" approach. The movie is complete with a gay biker gang, a sex scene in the middle of a horserace track, a man with full body tourettes, and a robotic head, just to name a few of the WTF moments, believe me there are many more. But what was I expecting from a movie where Chelios has to electrocute himself every few minutes in order to prevent his electronic heart from stopping.
It is virtually impossible to make a judgment call about "Crank 2" and so I won't really try. I personally thoroughly enjoyed the movie. Just ask yourself these questions: Do I like mindless violence?........ Well fine it's just really one question but if you answered Yes you will love "Crank 2." I still think "Crank" was a better action movie simply for the fact that even though 2 was ridiculous it did have some dull points when they were trying to delve into the ridiculous story.
"Crank 2" is really a movie you have to see to believe. But I will tell you it has one of my favorite lines ever. "Did you drop some change or did I just hear a chink?" Yes I am that easily amused. I also really loved the cheesy way that everything electric had "high voltage" written on it. I promise that if you go to this movie and like violence and vulgar language you will have a great time. If you're looking for anything but action please stay far far away because you will hate it. If you didn't like "Crank," 2 won't convert you to a fan of the franchise. For me it lived up to all of my expectations and then some.
